Lynn Horan, chair of the Holyoke Commission on Disability, announced she is resigning from the commission for health reasons and said Vice Chair Jessica Lebron Martinez will take over in the coming days.
"I am resigning, as I said, from the commission," Horan said, adding she will remain supportive while she addresses health issues. Commissioners described the transition as imminent and encouraged residents to join the volunteer body.
The commission said members are volunteers who generally meet 10 times a year and estimated a time commitment of about three and a half to four hours a month for active participants. Horan said state guidance requires most commission members to be people with disabilities, though the panel also accepts caretakers and interested community members.
To apply, the commissioners said residents should write a letter to Mayor Garcia expressing their interest. "You have to be a citizen of Holyoke," Martinez added, saying the commission had received inquiries from residents of other towns.
The change comes as the commission prepares to roll out an accessibility survey and use its newly authorized city budget to support education, transportation and parks accessibility initiatives.
