Rumford manager announces May 17 fire station dedication; public works flags parking and paving work

Town Manager George O'Keefe told the Board of Select Persons on May 1 that the town will hold a Dedication/Open House for the new fire station on May 17, 2025, and that more details will follow. He encouraged residents to register for the Rumford Connect app to receive local notices and updates.
O'Keefe also thanked the Animal Control Officer for recent successful work and commended Roberts at Public Works for his efforts. O'Keefe said economic development activity will intensify in the coming months, naming 119 Congress Street (the former KeyBank building) as an area to watch.
Department head Giroux said construction of new housing on Hancock Street through to Maine Avenue has strained street parking and created a safety concern, saying the current parking pattern "is going to cause an accident" if left unaddressed. The board discussed monitoring the situation; no formal traffic order or mitigation was recorded in the minutes.
Roberts (Public Works) reported completion of the spring cleanup (noting some household material was not separated for recycling), said asbestos removal is pending at the Parks building before demolition, and listed upcoming tasks including manhole repairs and paving of Oxford Avenue and Rangeley Street. Roberts also noted the Touch-a-Truck event at the Eagles this weekend, where the new grader will be displayed.
Select Board member DiConzo said he observed multiple drivers failing to stop at newly installed stop signs on Essex Avenue and suggested installing signs with flashing red lights to improve compliance. The board did not record a traffic-control order; DiConzo's observation will inform future discussions with Public Works.
