MSBA urges districts to plan for AI, announces free 'Spring into AI' workshop

The Missouri School Boards Association told the STE. GENEVIEVE CO. R-II board that artificial intelligence is no longer a future issue for schools and urged districts to create an AI plan now.
"AI is everywhere. And it's in your schools," Mark Henderson, MSBA director of AI strategy and services, said, adding that districts do not need computer scientists on their boards but do need a clear understanding of AI's uses and risks. Henderson said MSBA has updated its model policy (EHBD) and provides resources to help districts adapt it to local needs.
Henderson announced a free, hands-on workshop, "Spring into AI," scheduled for April 3 in Jefferson City, aimed at school leaders who want practical tools and conversations about implementing AI safely and responsibly. He said the workshop will include demonstrations and opportunities to help districts leave with a concrete plan.
Caitlyn Whe, MSBA senior director of advocacy, used the board report to remind districts to monitor the legislative session for school-finance proposals that could affect local budgets, mentioning property-tax proposals such as Senate Bill 3 and related foundation-formula discussions. Whe encouraged boards to follow MSBA's legislative updates and advocacy series.
MSBA also noted that March is School Board Recognition Month and encouraged districts to use MSBA materials to honor their school board members.
