Mishawaka outlines expanded summer learning programs and partnerships funded through state grant
Summary
Dr. Stock told the board about summer offerings: kindergarten Kickstart, Boys and Girls Club-funded summer learning labs for K–7 (academic intervention and enrichment), Jaguar Jumpstart for incoming middle-schoolers, a robotics camp, and an inclusive ADC camp for students with disabilities.
Dr. Stock, representing curriculum and instruction, presented an overview of the district's summer-learning slate, emphasizing academic supports and partnerships designed to reduce summer learning loss and expand access.
The district will again offer kindergarten Kickstart at elementary schools so incoming kindergarteners can learn routines and meet classmates. For students in grades K–7 the district will partner with the Boys and Girls Club to offer free summer learning labs that provide morning academic intervention and enrichment and afternoon club programming; the presenter said this work is funded through a grant from the Indiana Department of Education.
Middle- and high-school offerings include Jaguar Jumpstart at John Young Middle School to orient new students, credit-recovery and remediation programs at Mishawaka High School and other sites, and a returning robotics camp after a successful first year. The ADC inclusive camp at Beiger (for individuals with disabilities) will also return with field trips, recreation, and educational activities.
Dr. Stock said the district will prepare teachers, monitor progress using pre- and post-assessments, and use results to refine future summers.
