A team of district instructional coaches and specialists described coordinated work to improve classroom practice, assessment use and multi‑tiered supports across Pinckney Community Schools.
Laura Allen, Wendy Johnson, Katie Mon, Shannon Schaefer and MTSS coach Lisa Miles took turns describing how coaching cycles, learning labs and Otus (the district’s data platform) are being used to support teachers and students. The coaches said learning labs let teachers observe modeled lessons, practice with their own students and then reflect; one third‑grade coaching cycle used an error analysis to reshape tier‑two supports and produced improved oral‑reading accuracy for nearly all students in the targeted group.
Katie Mon described how Otus is being used to store teacher‑created assessments and common scoring rubrics (for example, writing rubrics aligned to the district’s Step Up to Writing expectations) so teachers can score consistently, sort student results, form instructional groups, and track growth across grade levels. The coaches said Otus will support a multiyear plan to scale common assessments K‑12.
Lisa Miles reviewed PBIS work and the district’s MTSS framework, saying each school now has a PBIS team and that behavior‑referral trends have improved where PBIS has been implemented. Superintendent Basha praised the coaching model as a strategic priority that was created without large new financing and credited coaching with measurable improvements and stronger professional collaboration.
Coaches told the board that new teachers are required to participate in coaching cycles and that veteran teachers have also sought coaching for targeted instructional problems. They asked for continued board support for the multi‑year rollout of Otus and the expansion of coaching capacity.
