Auburn council honors longtime volunteer, proclaims Pride Month and hears Youth Commission annual report

The Auburn City Council opened its June 1 meeting with a series of community recognitions and a youth presentation.

Placer County District 5 Supervisor Cindy Gustoson presented commemorative coins marking Placer County's 175th anniversary and praised local volunteerism. The council then read and approved a proclamation declaring June 2026 as Pride Month; a local LGBTQ+ ally and Auburn resident, Sue Thompson, spoke about inclusion and thanked council leadership for the recognition.

Council and community members also honored Planning Commissioner Steve Galliard for a decade of civic service, presenting a resolution, a commemorative clock and gifts from the Planning Commission and Historic Design Review Commission. Galliard accepted the recognition and thanked the city and residents.

Earlier in the agenda, the Auburn Youth Commission delivered its annual report. Student commissioners described monthly meetings, field trips to city departments, a youth-focused booth at SpringFest that included music, karaoke and a jewelry exchange (donated by the Auburn Senior Center), and the results of a youth-choice survey naming favorite local places (Auburn Bike Park, Auburn Gymnastics, Music Lab, Dutch Bros, Burgers & Cream). Students encouraged peers in grades 6–12 to apply for the 2026–27 commission, with applications due June 5.

The ceremonial and youth items drew applause and photos; no formal council action was required for the recognitions and youth presentation.
