Council to publish RFP for affordable housing on two town-owned Boston Neck Road parcels

The Narragansett Town Council approved a motion on June 1 directing the town manager to publish a request for proposals to develop affordable housing on two town-owned parcels at the Boston Neck Road / Old Boston Neck Road intersection.
Town Manager Jim Tierney and council members said the RFP is complete and scheduled to be posted Friday, June 5. Council discussion identified the pair of parcels as roughly 2.5 acres in total and noted the RFP language requires respondents to perform their own title examinations; council asked staff to run a preliminary title search to avoid imposing duplicative costs on nonprofit respondents.
Councilor Durkin summarized the planning and due diligence already conducted and said the town had not found conservation easements on those specific parcels dating back to mid-1970s research. The affordable housing trust collaborative had reviewed deed history and supported moving forward with the RFP. Tierney confirmed wetlands information was attached to the RFP and staff will publish the solicitation per the council’s instruction.
The motion to instruct the town manager to issue the RFP passed 5-0. Councilors encouraged careful coordination with environmental reviews and said respondents will be clearly required to demonstrate title and permit readiness as part of their proposals.
No developer was selected at the meeting; the council’s action authorizes issuing the solicitation and beginning the procurement process.
