Bryan ISD outlines strategic-planning outcomes; 175 families express interest in new virtual academy

Deputy Superintendent Dr. Brian Merrill told the Bryan ISD board that strategic-planning work across the spring engaged more than 100 community members, parent leaders, students and staff and produced recommendations that have already been turned into action items, including a virtual academy and a bond steering committee.

Merrill said the outreach included targeted focus groups (finance, academics, operations), campus visits and student input. "This group was even bigger than last time. We had at one point over 100 different individuals in here across representation from the entire community," he said.

As one immediate outcome, administrative staff reported 175 expressions of interest for the district's flexible-learning/virtual-academy option. Trustees heard how the academic and operations subgroup analyzed possible participants, extracurricular implications, advanced-academic alignment and rollout logistics before recommending a formal program structure to the board.

Merrill and staff said strategic planning will continue in the fall and noted topics to revisit include grade reconfiguration, start and end times and advanced-academic pathways. Many of the planning meetings and materials are posted on the district website for public review, officials said.

Board members praised the community engagement process and said the planning work both informed bond steering and produced programs staff can operationalize. Next steps include continuing communication with stakeholders, refining program details for the virtual academy rollout and returning for any formal approvals required for program implementation.
