Redevelopment commission approves up to $25,000 facade rebate for 2117 North Main Street

The Crown Point Redevelopment Commission approved a facade rebate of up to $25,000 for renovations at 2117 North Main Street.

Dan Calhoun, the property owner, told the commission he purchased the building about a year ago and wants to replace the front with brick and stone veneer, LP siding, new windows, a new roof and decking. He said he received three contractor bids with a total project estimate of about $116,000 and identified roughly $69,500 as the portion attributable to façade work. "What I'm asking the commission for is the facade rebate based on the ... $69,500," Calhoun said.

Redevelopment staff told the commission the application packet was complete and recommended approval of the full $25,000 rebate. A board member asked whether rebate payments required approvals or permits before work begins; staff and Calhoun said work could start as permit applications are filed and that they expect construction to begin in July and be largely finished by the second week of the month.

A board member moved to approve up to $25,000 for the facade grant and another board member seconded; the motion was adopted by voice vote. The transcript does not identify who moved or seconded the motion, nor does it record individual vote tallies.

The decision helps fund exterior improvements on a building directly south of the Lake County government complex on Main Street, a location commissioners noted could benefit from visual upgrades. Calhoun said renderings and contractor estimates were submitted with the application.
