Several Pinion Hills residents urged the Board of Supervisors to reject a planning commission approval for a proposed Maverick truck-stop and fueling center, citing traffic-safety risks, proximity to the post office and elementary school, and lack of documented coordination with Caltrans or the U.S. Postal Service.
Debbie McAfee told the board the station “will become the anchor of our town” and argued the project’s location — directly across from residences and the post office — would create traffic conflicts that endanger children and interfere with mail access. Anne Hale and Barbara Ferdette raised similar safety concerns, saying current intersections and local roads are too narrow and lack Caltrans-approved truck access; Ferdette noted that multiple fueling stations and truck-oriented entrances in the plan appear designed for large commercial trucks and that Oasis and Buckthorn Roads do not meet STAA truck-route standards.
Several speakers asked whether the applicant had obtained written confirmation from the U.S. Postal Service and Caltrans regarding traffic reconfiguration and signage; at least one speaker said the post office denied having been contacted. Residents requested documented proof that Caltrans and the post office had agreed to proposed roadway changes.
The board accepted public comments into the record and continued Item 106 to the June 9 meeting to allow additional review and public input.
