The Brownwood Police Department will apply for a grant from the Office of the Governor to replace its aging WatchGuard body-worn cameras, Assistant Police Chief Jesse Mares told the City Council during the Feb. 10 meeting. Mares said many of the department’s cameras are obsolete, out of warranty and no longer repairable; the grant would allow the department to transition all patrol officers to a common, supported system without impacting the City’s operating budget.
The department anticipates purchasing approximately 20 body-worn cameras and two charging stations if the grant is awarded. Councilmember Draco A. Miller moved to approve submission of the grant application; Councilmember Melody Nowowiejski seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
No specifics about matching funds or contingencies were provided in the meeting record; the council approved only the submission of the application.
