Madison County electoral board flags un-attributed redistricting sign; county attorney suggests ordinance changes

Board members reported an un-attributed sign depicting a proposed 7th Congressional District outside the County Administration Building, found the county's temporary-sign ordinance may not apply, and said the County Attorney suggested amendments; a member of the public objected to the sign.
Chairman Jim Smith told the Madison County Electoral Board on April 1 that a citizen group had placed a sign in front of the County Administration Building, the site of early voting, depicting the proposed 7th Congressional District and asking voters whether that district is what they want. The sign included no attribution identifying who placed it.
Smith said the specific language of Madison County’s ordinance on temporary signs apparently does not cover this particular sign and that the County Attorney has suggested possible amendments to the ordinance to remedy the gap. Smith added that the lack of attribution is an issue covered by state election law and therefore is not wholly within the County’s authority.
During the public-comment period an unidentified member of the public voiced objection to the sign. The board informally agreed that the county ordinance should be amended; no formal motion or vote to change the ordinance was recorded at the meeting.
The board adopted the amended agenda and then adjourned at 11:02 a.m.
