Madison County electoral board discusses cutting precincts to four as early voting rises

The Madison County Electoral Board met April 1 and discussed a plan by the Board of Supervisors to reduce the county’s voting precincts from eight to four when the time comes to purchase new voting equipment. Chairman Jim Smith said the capital budget now reflects that plan.
General Registrar Lauren Eanes told the board that, as of March 31, 1,238 people had voted in person and 189 mail-in ballots had been received, representing about 13% of registered voters. Eanes said early voting had continued steadily since the first day, a pattern board members said makes consolidation more feasible.
Secretary Bryan Mitchell urged care in selecting new polling locations, saying, “every effort should be made to make the new polling places as convenient as possible for the voters.” Board members noted Madison County schools have been suggested as possible polling sites but that no final decisions have been made.
Chairman Jim Smith also reported he had drafted a letter to County Administration (IT) regarding responsibilities under the Local Election Security Standards (LESS); the draft is under review by the Registrar. The board agreed to meet April 21 at 4:00 p.m. to review the state Department of Elections’ template for Electoral Board Duties and Delegations.
The board adopted the amended agenda and approved the minutes of its March 2, 2026 meeting. The meeting adjourned at 11:02 a.m.
