Students pitch downtown revitalization ideas as council previews summer music and Canada Day programs

A student delegation won the municipal youth challenge and presented a downtown revitalization concept to Hanover council on June 1, while council also set out its summer events program.
April Marshall introduced the youth municipal challenge and invited the winning team, who highlighted priorities including additional bike racks, seating and public art, tactile paving and audible pedestrian signals to improve accessibility, student discounts, a signature landmark sign for downtown, pop-up opportunities for small businesses, and seasonal festivals to boost foot traffic.
Councillors praised the students and noted the project fits with the town owntown plan. Councillor Susan Sacco said she took notes for the council owntown plan work already under way.
Separately, council received and carried a report on Music in the Square 2026: six years running, performances on 2nd and 4th Saturdays from June 13 to Aug 22 (11 a.m.–1 p.m.), with an expanded program on June 27 that will include an Eat Well market, a new‑resident welcome event and a Canadian Multiculturalism Day celebration. Council also received the Canada Day 2026 report: family activities at the town park, performances, displays of emergency vehicles, and a curling club breakfast (tickets $15 adults, $8 children under 12).
Council accepted the student presentation with thanks and photographed the delegation; staff said event programming will proceed as outlined.
