Boys & Girls Clubs report steady local participation as Atlantic Beach schedules facility renovations

Magdar Dupervall, the area director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Florida, told the Atlantic Beach Arts, Recreation & Culture Committee that the clubs began a partnership with the city in August 2023 and are now operating programming at Jordan Park and the Gail Baker Center.
"We currently have 2 clubs in Atlantic Beach at Jordan Park and at Veil Baker," Dupervall said, adding that the network services "about anywhere between 4,500 to 5,000 members a daily out of 59 sites" across the region. He told the committee the local sites serve "anywhere between 50 to 60 members at Jordan Park and anywhere between 35 to 40 at Gale Baker daily."
The presentation explained the club model and programming priorities — health and wellness, education, the arts, leadership/service and STEM — and emphasized continuity across sites while avoiding a "cookie cutter" approach. Dupervall also said renovations to Jordan Park and the Gail Baker Center are scheduled to begin next week and that the clubs will outfit those facilities "BGC style" to support spring-break and summer-camp programming.
Committee members asked about facility sharing and oversight. Dupervall said communication has been "great" between club leadership and city staff on shared programming and cited site directors Brooke Thornell at Jordan Park and Jaleesa Jackson at Gail Baker. Kevin, the committee chair, said Jordan (the committee's recreation manager) will serve as the liaison between the city and the clubs.
The committee did not take a formal vote on the report; members thanked Dupervall and asked staff to continue coordinating participation counts and renovation timelines. The chairs and staff said they will circulate any additional details to the committee once the city's renovation schedule and program plans are finalized.
