Hanover council on June 1 adopted the town—ylaw formalizing the 2026 levy requirement and tax rates after a presentation from the director of corporate services and treasurer.
Director Jelena Sabic told council the mayoral budget produced a $10,060,000 levy and explained how rate changes at the county and education levels affect the local share. Sabic said that while the levy rose 8.2%, the town tax rate increased 7.7% and, accounting for county and education portions, the total residential tax increase is approximately 6.3%, which she estimated would be about $235 a year for the average homeowner.
The report notes the town—annot control county or education tax rates and emphasized the municipality—ontrols only its expenditures. Council moved, read and passed the necessary bylaw to permit collection of the 2026 levy.
Councilors did not propose amendments to the bylaw during the session. The motion carried unanimously as put to the question by the mayor.
The bylaw passed is listed in the council package as Bylaw 3402-26. Next steps: the bylaw will be signed and entered in the town bylaw book, and staff said budget-related monitoring and communications to residents will continue.
