Fairfield County Land Bank awarded $1 million Brownfield grant to remediate former Barclay Petroleum site

County Administrator Aundrea Cordle told commissioners that Governor Mike DeWine and Ohio Department of Development Director Lydia Mihalik announced $61.1 million in Brownfield Remediation Program awards statewide. Under HB 96 each county received a $1 million set-aside for State Fiscal Year 2026; Fairfield County Land Bank was awarded $1 million to remediate the former Barclay Petroleum property, a nearly 10-acre former petroleum pump station.
Cordle said work will remove contaminated materials and petroleum-impacted soils, dispose of outdated infrastructure, and restore the site to applicable environmental standards. Once remediation is complete, the property is expected to transfer to the Village of Bremen to permit recreational redevelopment including soccer fields, a softball diamond, trails, ADA-accessible paths and creek access amenities.
Cordle thanked Treasurer James Bahnsen and the Fairfield County Land Bank for their efforts in securing the grant. The county noted that counties with remaining set-aside funds may apply for additional grants through June 5 before the fiscal year ends and that $108 million has been appropriated for SFY2027, with future awards to be merit-based rather than by county set-aside.
