Onslow County approves two rezonings and several county contracts including EMS interlocal and senior services grant

Onslow County commissioners on June 1 approved two rezoning requests and several administrative contracts and grants.
Planning staff presented PZ2026-2 (Folkston Original Free Will Baptist Church): a request to rezone 3.74 acres from R-8M (manufactured/residential) to Highway Business to allow construction of a gym and church expansion; the planning board recommended unanimous approval and no members of the public registered opposition. Commissioners approved the rezoning.
The board also approved PZ2026-3 (Wilson), a rezoning of a 0.25-acre parcel from R-8M to Community Business to allow reuse of an existing nonconforming commercial structure; applicant Jerry Mitchell said he leases the property and intends to operate a business out of the building.
On administrative items, Senior Services Director Melena Williams requested approval to accept a Home and Community Care Block Grant totaling $847,357 with a required local match of $82,259; the board approved the contract contingent on adoption of the FY2027 budget. Emergency Services Director Bradley Kinlaw presented an interlocal agreement to allow reciprocal borrowing of ambulance vehicles with the nearby installation to maintain EMS coverage; commissioners authorized the manager to execute the agreement. County staff and the volunteer fire commission described a revised contract template for county funding of volunteer fire departments; the board authorized execution once the budget and funding formula are finalized.
These approvals were routine votes intended to preserve service continuity and enable planned capital and operational investments described earlier in the meeting.
