ODOT honors employees and wins national awards for snowplow.org initiative

The Transportation Commission paused its agenda June 1 to mourn the death of Russell Perkins, described by Director Gance as ODOT's longtime photographer of 28 years. "Please keep Russell's family in your thoughts and prayers," Director Gance said, and the commission observed a moment of silence.
The meeting then turned to awards and recognition. Taylor Henderson told commissioners that ODOT's snowplow.org platform and related public engagement earned two honors: a national operations award from the National Operations Center of Excellence and a Heartland IT product award. "Snowplows platform provides real time snowplow locations and road condition updates, helping travelers make it safer, more informed decisions during winter weather," Henderson said. Henderson also said the concurrent snowplow-naming contest drew nearly 400 creative name submissions and more than 2,100 votes.
Commissioners and staff presented ODOT's annual safety awards, noting district winners and recognizing crews and individuals who contributed to a strong safety culture. Director Gance highlighted District 2's record of more than 391,000 hours worked with two on-the-job injuries that did not result in lost time and praised the department's emphasis on worker and motorist safety.
The commission recessed the awards presentation and resumed routine business later in the meeting.
