Perth Amboy’s City Council on May 27 opened a first reading of an ordinance to allow licensed establishments to apply for extended alcohol sales during the FIFA World Cup window, June 11 through July 20, 2026.
Under the proposal, regular closing times remain unchanged but an added session would permit qualified licensees to operate later during the specified period. Any establishment that wants to operate after 2:00 a.m. must submit an application to the city and receive administration approval before doing so. The city will require compliance with all noise ordinances and, at the discretion of the police chief, the hiring of off‑duty officers for security; those costs are to be borne by the establishment. The ordinance also allows the city to suspend the privilege for individual licensees if conditions are not met.
City staff said the ordinance aims to give businesses a temporary option tied to the international event while maintaining public‑safety controls. The measure was presented for first reading; council members did not record extended public debate during the first reading.
Next steps: the ordinance proceeds through the city’s legislative process and would return for a subsequent reading and a formal vote before becoming effective. Businesses seeking to apply were directed to the clerk’s office for the application process and additional guidance.
