State wildlife officials offer funding match and partnerships for county conservation projects

Blair Stringham, northern region supervisor for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, spoke during public comment at the June 1 COSAC meeting and expressed support for the county’s open-space work.
Stringham said DWR has ‘‘a few different funding sources available,’’ including revenue from the Pittman-Robertson program (a user-tax on sporting goods) and a conservation-permit program. He said those funds often provide good matches (‘‘a three-to-one match’’) when paired with nonfederal funds and that DWR prioritizes projects with clear wildlife habitat benefits. He added the agency can provide resources, technical assistance and potential funding to complement county and partner contributions.
Stringham also noted the agency’s local outreach efforts and a regional deer committee made up of Cache Valley citizens to discuss deer-population issues and collaborate on habitat solutions.
The committee thanked DWR for the offer and asked Stringham to detail grant types and match requirements in follow-up communications; Stringham provided his title and office location and invited further coordination with county staff.
