Board allocates $1,975 from contingency to cover marine patrol grant shortfall

County officials told the Ogemaw County Board of Commissioners that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has paused processing marine safety grants for 2025 while it seeks clarification from the U.S. Coast Guard on new terms. The pause jeopardized a budgeted $7,900 reimbursement that had been assumed in the county's FY2025 marine enforcement budget.
A sheriff's office representative (Paul) briefed the board that under the revised approach the state expects a 75/25 split, making 25 percent of the previously expected $7,900 the county’s responsibility. "So basically what that means for us is that 7,900 that's currently budgeted, 25% of that would be county responsibility," Paul said, explaining the county could cover the shortfall from contingency to maintain planned patrol levels.
Commissioner Serbrook moved to allocate $1,975 from contingency to cover the county share; Commissioner Wily supported the motion. Commissioners Mark Serbrook, Craig (Greg) Scott and Jenny David recorded "yes" on the roll call and the motion passed. County staff said the funds would come from the general fund contingency and that staff would proceed to operate marine patrols within the adjusted budget.
Officials noted the marine enforcement budget for FY2025 assumed $11,400 in total patrol costs with $7,900 expected from a state/federal grant; if additional patrols are requested, the county would have to increase the local match proportionally.
