Council approves 10-year Axon contract for Tasers, cameras and software after one dissent

The Geneva City Council voted to approve Resolution 2026-55, authorizing a 10-year contract to standardize the city’s Axon equipment and support services (Taser 7 program plus body and vehicle cameras and associated software) using the State of Illinois Sourcewell contract.
City staff said the bundled agreement was negotiated to align multiple existing Axon contracts on the same schedule and to produce savings from consolidated purchases. In the meeting record, staff estimated roughly "$556,998 over the life of the agreement," described in discussion as about "$55,700 annually." City Attorney Sandach reminded the council for the record that this contract represents an annual appropriation and remains subject to the council’s budgeting decisions.
Alder person Bering said they continued to hold reservations about the length of the contract and preferred a shorter term; Bering stated they were "not able to support it because of my reservations" and raised concern that early termination could require repayment of realized savings. Deputy Chief and the Chief of Police were present for technical questions; no changes to the proposed contract language were made at the meeting.
The council approved the resolution by roll call: seven votes in favor, one opposed (Bering), and two members absent. Staff characterized the contract as using the Sourcewell cooperative procurement vehicle and noted that the council can terminate the agreement if future budget decisions require it. The council directed standard implementation steps following the approval; no additional amendments or conditions were placed on the contract at the meeting.
