Evelyn Rogers of the Onslow County Department of Social Services said the county will mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day with a public event on June 17 at the Jacksonville Commons Recreation Department gym (10 a.m.–12 p.m.). The event will include vendors and speakers from the courts, banking fraud investigators and senior-service organizations; organizers expect 75–100 attendees and said registration is available online or attendees can simply show up.
Rogers explained awareness definitions: for outreach the county uses an elder definition of ages 50–100, while Adult Protective Services (APS) and guardianship work can apply for adults 18–100 who may need protective services. She said common contributors to abuse include ageism and isolation and urged community inclusion, transportation, and senior programming to reduce risk.
On reporting, Rogers said suspected abuse can be reported anonymously to APS and the agency will follow up or provide referrals. She encouraged neighbors and community members to check on seniors and contact APS if they see concerning signs rather than assume someone else will act.
