The Little Falls City Council on June 1 authorized a match‑commitment letter to pursue a Federal Railroad Administration grant for the Trunk Highway 27 bridge project.
City staff described the grant program as offering up to $80 million in total and said the maximum individual award could be $64 million, which would require a $6 million local match if sought at the full award level. Staff told the council the city has $13 million in state funds available for the project, $2 million in state aid that is earmarked and $1 million from the railroad; staff said, based on that package, no additional city cash match is required to submit an application.
Alex explained the match sources and recommended the council approve the commitment letter so the city may apply. "So today what we are asking for is the council to approve the commitment letter to apply for this grant for our bridge project," Alex said. Council approved the motion by voice vote.
Staff said the state aid dollars are earmarked for identified state‑aid roads but can be applied to the bridge if the city elects to dedicate them; final award amounts and any required match will depend on the grant application and award level.
