District previews draft AI guidelines for classrooms and staff ahead of expected ISBE rules

At the June 1 board meeting, district staff presented a draft of artificial-intelligence guidelines intended for student and staff use in Springfield SD 186. Dr. Philippiac, who led the district's AI committee, said the framework "H-AI-H" (human-AI-human) is designed to position teachers as the classroom experts while using AI tools as supports.
Committee work included five meetings this school year with representation across elementary, middle and high schools and included special-education and classroom teachers, administrators and other staff. The draft calls for teacher-led instruction on responsible AI use, professional development for staff, filtered access to Google Gemini through district Google accounts and administrative alerts when content raises concerns. "We want to teach students how to use it responsibly and ... check that it's real genuine correct information," Dr. Philippiac said.
The district plans to compare its draft to state guidance the Illinois State Board of Education expects to publish by July 1, and then add approved language to the student and family handbook. Board members expressed support and asked for a follow-up once the state guidance is released.
What's next: district staff will reconcile the committee's draft with ISBE guidance and return to the board for formal consideration.
