Prairie County votes to add 1906 bank building to National Register to access preservation grants

Prairie County commissioners voted during their Jan. 15 meeting to add the 1906 Bank building to the National Register, a step the county said is necessary to qualify for certain preservation grants under SHIPO (State Historic Preservation Office) requirements.

Museum staff and preservation advocates described structural concerns, primarily foundation problems noted during earlier inspections, and asked the board’s permission to pursue the listing so grant-funded repairs could address the foundation and mortar repointing. Staff told the board the designation does not necessarily prohibit exterior repairs; in many cases original windows may be retained or replaced with insulated windows if appropriate. ADA accessibility needs were also discussed: staff said a simple ramp and handrail would likely address primary access concerns but noted the building interior may be tight for wheelchair turning unless reconfigured.

A motion to add the 1906 bank building to the historic register was made and seconded and passed on a voice vote. Commissioners asked staff to include the motion and supporting materials in the meeting minutes and follow up with grant applications.
