DPR plans accessible picnic site at Bear Creek’s northern entry, design to wrap this year

Denver Parks and Recreation staff said they have begun design for a new accessible picnic site near Bear Creek Park’s northern entry and northern parking lot, with amenities that include picnic tables, grills, trash receptacles, a shade structure and space for recreational activities.
Elizabeth M., the project manager for the picnic-area scope, said design work began in early June and the combined design-and-construction budget is approximately $850,000, financed through the Elevate Bond and the department’s Capital Improvement Project budget. She said staff expect to complete design by December 2024 and tentatively program construction for spring through fall 2025.
Elizabeth said the team aims to hold a community design pop-up at the park in mid-July (she cited July 11 as a potential date to be confirmed) to solicit input about activities and structure styles. She told attendees the team will advertise the event with flyers and yard signs and that the public will be informed in advance if partial parking spaces are needed during construction; staff do not expect a full lot closure.
The picnic-area project is a separate, parallel effort to the south-side trail and bridge work and staff said they will coordinate outreach and design to reflect the Bear Creek Park Vision Plan’s recommendations for Phase 1B.
