Board tightens overnight trip oversight, approves modified assistant athletic director qualifications

The Johnson City Schools board discussed student welfare related to extended overnight trips and approved two policy/practice changes at its June meeting.

Board members expressed concern about students missing consecutive school days for multi‑day trips and the emotional stress such absences sometimes cause. Administration described a new spreadsheet that will compile all approved overnight field trips alongside individual trip forms; the spreadsheet will be presented monthly to the board and will be updated to show chaperone names once background checks and fingerprinting are complete. The intent is to allow early logistical approval for trips while allowing the board to approve chaperones later after vetting.

Separately, the board debated qualifications for an assistant athletic director position. Some members said strict requirements (an administrative endorsement tied to a master’s degree) could exclude qualified local candidates. Administration said endorsement requirements support evaluation responsibilities at the high‑school level and are consistent with expectations for career progression to full athletic director roles. The board voted to approve the job description as modified: a bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree and an educational administration endorsement preferred.

Both items passed by voice vote. Board members said the spreadsheet approach will continue to include the original trip forms for context and to document eligibility and funding considerations for students who need financial support.
