Select Board reviews railroad crossing safety proposals for Buffum Road after collision

North Berwick — The Select Board on March 3 heard details of proposed safety improvements for the Buffum Road railroad crossing following a collision earlier this year.
Dwayne Morin, a town staff member, told the board that representatives from the Federal Railroad Administration met with local officials to discuss short- and long-term solutions. He said proposed measures include realigning the existing gate, lengthening the gate arm to improve coverage and better defining the roadway as it approaches the crossing.
Chairperson Wendy Cowan asked when the FRA’s findings would be available; Morin said the agency’s final report should be ready “within the month.” The board did not take any formal action and the report will guide next steps if the town pursues changes that require state or federal coordination.
The discussion followed a collision at the intersection weeks earlier. Morin said Chief Peasley attended the FRA meeting; the minutes do not record additional public comment on the crossing during the March 3 meeting.
The Select Board will await the FRA report and decide whether to pursue the proposed modifications or seek additional engineering review.
