Staff: resolution notices must be mailed to taxing entities by June 5

City staff told the Garrett City Council that paperwork for a pending resolution must be mailed to several taxing entities and related offices, and asked the council to formally sign the resolution so staff can complete statutory notifications.

“Send something off by June 5,” a staff member said, adding that statute requires mailing notices to about seven or eight different entities, including the county airport corporation, county auditor and township trustee. The staff member said the council’s resolutions were attached to the meeting packet and that staff would prepare original copies for signature.

Why it matters: state statute requires municipalities to notify certain taxing entities when passing some resolutions or levies; timely mailing completes a legal step and enables downstream actions by those entities. The staff member urged the council to sign the paperwork so notices can be dispatched.

The clerk and staff discussed who would produce and sign the final originals; the clerk offered to prepare the paperwork the following day. The meeting record shows no formal vote on the resolution during this session.
