Person County quarterly strategic update highlights broadband gaps, FAA runway assessment approval

County Manager Katherine presented Person County's quarter-three strategic-plan update on June 1, detailing department-level accomplishments and ongoing projects covering January through March 2026.
Katherine highlighted broadband expansion as a continuing priority: "Currently there are only 316 unserved or underserved and unfunded locations throughout the county and 111 of those are pending funding through the BEAD program," she said, adding that county staff continue to work with the state to secure funding to connect remaining locations.
The update listed additional accomplishments: the Federal Aviation Administration approved the environmental assessment for a runway extension project; the county completed renovation of the 911 emergency communications center; the North Carolina Office of EMS completed its audit of the county EMS system plan with no findings; the animal services department launched a low-cost spay-and-neuter program in partnership with a local veterinarian; finance implemented a new P-Card system for records management; GIS staff began citywide water and sewer mapping under contract; recreation completed a cabin at Mayo Lake Park and installed new ballfield lighting at Mount Tirza Park.
Katherine said departments provide quarterly reports aligned with budget goals and invited commissioners to raise questions or request more detail at upcoming work sessions. The chair reminded commissioners about an upcoming budget work session on June 4.
