Solid Waste Board: recycling revenue up, repairs and insurance claims driving expenses

At its Dec. 9 meeting the Jefferson County Solid Waste Board heard an operations report showing increased recycling volumes and revenue alongside rising equipment and vehicle-repair costs.
Manager (Manager) said the operation recycled about 200 gallons of oil (cost reported as $100) and handled 8.818 tons of cardboard; aluminum and tin figures were reported at about 0.5 tons and 1.1 tons, respectively. The manager said steel receipts and other materials produced a return that made hauling worthwhile and described the overall year-to-date totals for several collection points (Whitehall, Montana City, Boulder, Jefferson City, Clancy, Basin and the office).
"I think this is our best year in revenue so far," the manager said, praising crew training and operational adjustments.
Staff reported a landfill-name/ownership change at one hauling destination (transcript reference: Elhorn Landfill) and said Republic (collection partner) had tightened rules and closed Saturday service at one site, requiring some hauling to Montana City during winter.
On equipment, the manager described a compactor with a bent rail that staff will repair (not replace) because replacement is more expensive. The manager said a rebuilt truck engine estimate was about $54,000 and noted the department's insurance deductible figures were discussed but not consistently recorded on the transcript.
Board members also reviewed junk-vehicle releases and enforcement work in Whitehall and Boulder Basin and discussed an upcoming resolution to address persistent mobile-home and junk-vehicle problems. No formal votes were recorded on the operational items.
The board moved on after the operations update to other agenda items and adjourned.
