State law change forces grading-policy rewrite; committee plans July revisions

The policy committee on June 1 was told that new state legislation changes grading practices previously used by some districts and will require the Colleton County School District to revise both its policy IKA and accompanying administrative rules.
Counsel told the committee that the legislature has removed the practice of inflating low student marks to a 50 minimum. "The legislature has now said you cannot have a grade for a 50. So if somebody makes a 20, they get a 20," she said, and recommended the district update its policy and rule language to reflect the statutory change.
Committee members agreed to place the revised grading policy on the July agenda to ensure compliance before the start of the school year. Counsel said administrative-rule references to a 50-point floor will be changed and that final language will follow the statutory text.
The committee did not adopt language at the June 1 meeting; instead, counsel will draft required revisions and present them in July for first reading and subsequent board action.
