EAC finalizes Community Day plans and a free tree-adoption on Sept. 18

The McCandless Environmental Advisory Committee finalized plans for Community Day and related outreach at its Sept. 10 meeting, confirming a free tree-adoption pre-release on Sept. 18, programming for children, and volunteer staffing windows.
Committee member Bernie said the pre-adoption will open on Sept. 18 and that "the first 100 people will get trees." The tree-tender training is planned as a morning session (9 a.m.–3 p.m.) with tree distribution in a 3–5 p.m. window; Arch agreed to co-chair the tree program with Bernie. Volunteers are being coordinated through Abby, and the committee asked members and students to help staff a 2–6 p.m. crafts window (crafts run in 45-minute blocks).
Community Day booth plans include two low-mess crafts (leaf rubbings and sun-catchers), a scavenger-tree hunt around Demp Park, a sensory-themed "tree planting" activity for young children, and an outreach "waste wheel" game with small giveaways. Joanna described partnerships with nearby growers and greenhouses as a potential way to source native plants or seeds for rain-garden and native-plant efforts. Members discussed setup logistics (setup around 12:30 p.m.), parking/shuttle notes, and the timing of the town fireworks that evening.
Separately, Melissa reported the Penn State student cohort will assemble energy, water and waste inventories and aims to present findings to the EAC in December and convert those findings into a plan during the following semester.
