Council authorizes application for AFG radio-equipment grant to replace outdated fire radios

The council on Jan. 20 authorized the Yreka Fire Department to apply for an Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) to replace aging department radios and accessories.
Fire Chief Leis said the department needs roughly 20 new radios, chargers, microphones and antennas to standardize communications and allow interoperability with responding mutual-aid agencies. He reported one vendor quote near $56,000 and said he expected a second quote; the department previously purchased four compatible radios with a separate noncompetitive $15,000 California Fire Foundation award.
Chief Leis said grant-writing assistance from Lexiple costs $5,400 and may be recoverable if the grant succeeds. "We want to standardize what we have..." he said, stressing interoperability during multi-agency incidents.
Council Member McCoy moved and Council Member Davis seconded a motion to approve the fire department’s request to apply for the AFG radio-equipment grant in the amount of $25,000 with Lexiple assistance; the council voted in favor and the motion passed.
Staff said they will return with updated quotes and any grant-match or budget implications should the grant require a local contribution.
