The New Haven Village Council voted to accept a multi‑year contract with the county sheriff’s office to retain current deputy coverage through 2027.
Staff presented projected costs by year and said the first year of the new contract would be about $1,133,410. Council members questioned available revenue sources to help offset the cost and discussed the large expense of reestablishing a municipal police department (vehicles, equipment and staffing), which staff said would likely be in the millions.
Council acknowledged public‑safety benefits of current traffic deputies and enforcement presence at key intersections but concluded that the sheriff contract remains the more affordable option at present. A motion to accept the contract was moved, seconded and carried by roll call.
Next steps: staff will execute the contract for 2025–2027 and continue to review revenues available to offset costs annually.
