Sheriff presented a personnel restructuring for the county jail at the June 1 meeting, and the council voted to approve the updated job descriptions.
Under the plan the sheriff described, the current jail-commander classification (at major rank) would be reduced to a captain-level pay grade; an assistant-jail-commander position at lieutenant rank would be created; and two first-sergeant positions would be added beneath those roles to handle day-to-day duties. The sheriff said the changes are intended to improve succession planning and daily supervision and that no current employees would receive a pay decrease as a result.
Melissa Green moved to approve the updated job descriptions for jail commander, assistant jail commander and jail first sergeant; the motion was seconded by Roy (transcript also lists Troy) Sprinkle and passed on a voice vote.
Council materials indicate the changes align the jail positions with the county's pay matrix and are expected to produce net savings by lowering top-of-range discrepancies across the matrix. The sheriff answered committee questions in a prior job committee meeting, according to the transcript, and the job committee recommended the change.
