Clayton County board spotlights teachers, students in end-of-year recognitions

At a June meeting the Clayton County Board of Education honored teachers and students across the district, awarding a District Teacher of the Year, national teaching recognitions, and multiple student competition victories from math contests to academic decathlon and Flagway nationals.
The Clayton County Board of Education opened its meeting with a series of end-of-year recognitions, honoring teachers, students and school teams for state and national achievements.
The board named Miss Alicia Gant, a STEM teacher at E.W. Oliver Elementary School, the 2026–2027 District Teacher of the Year; the board said she was chosen from six district semi-finalists and will advance to state competition. The board also recognized Ms. Latrell James Brown of MD Roberts School of the Arts for earning a national Teacher of the Year distinction from the Hutton Mifflin Hardcourt Reed 180 program.
Board members celebrated multiple student accomplishments: Jeremiah Vanier (Elite Scholars Academy) won the GHSA Class A Division 2 state triple jump title with a 46-foot, 1-inch leap; Elite Scholars teams earned individual medals at the U.S. Academic Decathlon; an Elite Scholars middle-school team placed first in the Georgia Stock Market game for the 13th Congressional District; dozens of students placed in First in Math statewide leaderboards (including the Assari family finishing second nationally); Challenge 24 teams won state championships across grade levels; and MD Roberts Middle School’s Flagway team was named national champion at the Flagway competition.
The board acknowledged partners and funders credited with supporting extracurricular success, including the Young People’s Project, the Atlanta Algebra Project and Kennesaw State University, and invited principals, coaches and student teams to the stage for photos and applause.
The recognitions highlighted districtwide student achievement in STEM, literacy, mathematics and extracurricular competitions; the board closed the segment by thanking teachers, families and community partners for their support.
The meeting then moved into the business portion of the agenda.
