Contractors have been repointing brick and repairing the historic Old Town Hall under a preservation grant administered through a National Park Service subgrant, presenters told the Select Board.
Work so far included removal of a non‑original front ramp that exposed a missing pink‑granite step. The town has located fragments of original stone but will need to source a replacement piece to match the historic material. Repointing required multiple mortar tests to match color and composition; contractors have completed work along the police station side and are continuing on remaining façades.
Because the building is on the state historic register and the grant program includes federal oversight, proposed railings must be historically sympathetic and reviewed by the National Park Service. Presenters said they are coordinating with the grant manager and an on‑site preservation consultant; if railings are unnecessary, they will not be installed. Work is expected to finish by August, and funding will come from historic preservation CPC funds and the Paul Brun/National Park Service subgrant.
