Springs resident urges smaller library parking lot during public comment

During the public-comment portion of Tuesday's East Hampton Town Board work session, Springs resident Bidd Duke called in to urge caution about a concept for a 35-space gravel parking lot behind the Springs Library.
Duke said he recognizes the parking shortage in the triangle near the library and praised the library and Springs CAC for addressing the issue, but asked the town to consider a smaller initial footprint. "Can we just start smaller? Can we begin with something half the size of 35 or 20 spaces?" Duke asked, adding that the area is valued for its small-town character and that a trail connecting the library to Montauk Market and School Street must be preserved.
Deputy Supervisor Ian (Council Member Calder Pedmont) responded later in the meeting to clarify that the layout shown to the public is a conceptual design and that the proposed lot would be sited on library-owned parking area, not on preserved land. He said the town has recently hired an engineer to prepare a formal plan and that further public review (work sessions and CAC meetings) will be held before any final design proceeds.
Next steps: Officials said they welcome additional public comments and will refine the design with input from natural-resources staff, planners and residents; the board emphasized the design is not final and that traffic and geometric constraints (aisle widths, ingress/egress) will be considered in determining final capacity.
