Collingswood commission approves 4% water and sewer rate hikes; connection and hydrant fees also raised

The Borough of Collingswood commission approved second readings and public hearings on ordinances to raise utility rates and related fees, recording affirmative votes from the commissioners present and the mayor.
At the public hearing on Ordinance 1821, the commission approved a 4% increase in water rates set to take effect Jan. 1. Staff noted prior follow-up with a resident (Mr. Clingerman) on sequencing questions and said staff member Cass will follow up directly. Shortly after, the commission approved Ordinance 1822, a 4% increase in sewer rates also effective Jan. 1.
Commissioners announced their votes aloud: Commissioner Bley said yes; Commissioner Henderson Riley said yes; and the mayor announced a yes vote, indicating those present supported adoption on second reading.
The commission also held second readings and public hearings on Ordinance 1823, which raises water connection fees for new houses and other connections to align Collingswood’s charges with neighboring towns, and Ordinance 1824, which raises fire-hydrant rental fees charged where Collingswood provides water service. The commission recorded affirmative votes for those ordinances in the meeting’s roll-call sequence.
A first reading of Ordinance 1825 (salary ranges) was held separately; that ordinance was not adopted at this meeting and will return for final action at a December wrap-up meeting when salary figures are finalized.
The ordinances affecting water, sewer, connection and hydrant fees are scheduled to take effect Jan. 1 unless otherwise amended; staff told the commission the increases bring the borough in line with comparable municipalities.
