Representatives from the Tennessee Valley Authority and Middle Tennessee Electric briefed the Rutherford County Board of Education on a long‑running partnership to deliver energy‑efficiency projects in district schools, reporting nearly $1.7 million in incentives and an estimated annual energy reduction of about 8.5 million kilowatt‑hours.
Megan Keane of TVA said the agencies have completed 89 projects across 52 school buildings, including LED upgrades, HVAC improvements and geothermal units that reduce operating costs and improve indoor air quality. Glenn Hollingsworth of Middle Tennessee Electric told the board the incentive payments and annual savings help keep utility costs down and support long‑term retention of local businesses.
Keane and Hollingsworth offered a photo opportunity and presented a check representing incentives realized over the last 18 months; board members clarified that the amounts described are received as bill incentives and rebates applied over time rather than as a single lump‑sum payment to the district.
Board members and staff praised the partnership and said the incentives have allowed the district to stretch 177 and other funds to complete more efficiency projects.
Next steps: the utilities and district will continue active projects and pursue additional opportunities to pair incentives with capital HVAC upgrades where cost‑effective.
