The Beatrice City Council on Tuesday approved its consent agenda, formally recommended a liquor license application for Russ’s Market to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission and adopted a resolution accepting a donated parcel at 820 Market Street.
Council member Mr. Mlan moved to approve the consent agenda, which included claims reports, pay requests and change orders on several public‑works projects; the motion carried on the council vote (recorded as 8 in favor). The consent list included reports from Boswell and the Board of Public Works and several vendor pay requests; some dollar figures read into the record were garbled in the transcript and are not specified here.
During a public hearing, Chad McGregor, community development director, said a background check and a police report prepared by Sergeant Burn raised no issues that would prohibit issuance of a temporary operating permit or the permanent Class C liquor license for BNR Stores Inc., doing business as Russ’s Market at 1815 Court Street in Beatrice. No representative of the store addressed the council during the hearing. The council closed the hearing and then moved that the application be recommended to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission; the motion passed 7–1.
Later the council held a public hearing on a proposed donation of real property identified in the record as Lot 11, block 60, commonly known as 820 Market Street. McGregor said the house on the parcel had been damaged by fire several years ago and that the owner, identified in the record as Benjamin Pel, would donate the property to the city and pay the back taxes; the city plans to demolish the structure and has no immediate reuse plan. Resident James Nelson thanked the city for posting the meeting packet, noting it made the donation clear to the public. The council adopted Resolution No. 7803 authorizing the contract and all necessary documents to acquire the real estate; the vote was recorded as 8–0.
The meeting closed with routine business and an adjournment vote (8–0).
