He cautioned against repeating unverified assertions about the building’s condition because inaccurate public statements could damage the town’s negotiating position and residents’ interests if the board later solicits offers.
Rifenberg said staff member Warren is reviewing property bounds and easements, and the town will soon receive a title search. He noted past town practices that resolved easement or utility relocation issues and said those tools would be available if the town chose to proceed on a sale.
A resident during public comment had urged demolition of the old town hall and suggested using the cleared site for farmers markets, amphitheaters and parking to activate nearby businesses; the board said it will gather professional assessments before publicly committing to a path.
The board expects a further update after Warren completes due diligence and staff compiles findings for the next meeting.
