Sugar Land approves $100,000 interlocal from Fort Ben County to support FIFA tourism efforts

The Sugar Land City Council on June 2 authorized an interlocal agreement with Fort Ben County for $100,000 to support FIFA World Cup 2026-related tourism and a corresponding budget amendment.
Allison Brooks, assistant director of tourism, said Fort Ben County commissioners approved the $100,000 agreement on May 14 and that the county recently began collecting a 2% hotel occupancy tax to reinvest in tourism initiatives. Brooks said the county's new $100,000 contribution adds to an earlier $250,000 the county provided, bringing the county's total partnership contribution to $350,000 toward Sugar Land's FIFA efforts.
Council members asked whether outside contributions must be approved by council and whether the county contribution reduces previously approved city expenditures. Brooks said the $880,000 the council previously authorized for watch parties is part of the city's overall $1 million FIFA budget; the county funds offset the city's net expense within that broader budget. Brooks said staff will present any additional outside partnerships to council when they arrive.
Council Member Single moved to approve the interlocal and the budget amendment; the motion was seconded and passed as recorded.
