Parks survey finds broad support for events and modest improvements; renaming sparks debate

Robin Lochner, vice chair of Tinicum Township’s Parks & Recreation Committee, presented preliminary results from a May survey showing 320 responses (119 paper, 201 online) and widespread support for modest park improvements.
The survey found 81% of respondents use at least one park feature and 91% support more events at park facilities. Lochner said low-cost, low-maintenance items such as benches and picnic tables were the most requested improvements; many respondents also cited the meadow and walking trail behind Cooper Mechanical as a valued space. On budgeting, 87% of respondents favored increasing park funding beyond routine mowing and electricity.
The survey included an item on renaming a park; 87% of respondents supported a name change but opinions diverged about the appropriate new name, with suggestions ranging from “Cooper Park” to locally themed names. Lochner said the committee will return in July with fuller results and recommendations for which items can be advanced quickly and which would require grant funding or 2027 budgeting.
Board members urged committee members to submit materials in advance of the July meeting so supervisors can review the data. Supervisors flagged resurfacing large items such as tennis courts as projects likely requiring grant applications or budget changes, while smaller improvements could be handled more promptly.
The committee said it will use the July meeting to surface specific, prioritized proposals for the board to consider.
