County Manager Timothy Hunt and Legislator Jake Moer reported they visited Fort Drum to assess interest in establishing a DMV on post. Moer said they were given a one-year visitor pass and were shown potential office spaces; he described the post’s leadership as committed and said the initial indication was the post would provide support and that there would likely be no cost to the county for equipment or administration.
Moer said a Fort Drum office could serve active-duty soldiers and the roughly 15,000 civilian contractors on post, some of whom are Lewis County residents. He stressed the conversation was preliminary and that county staff are still gathering numbers and cost estimates.
No formal agreement or timeline was announced; county officials said they would continue to pursue details and assess potential impacts and costs before bringing a proposal back to the board.
