The selection drew repeated mention of representation: several former principals, alumni and community leaders told the board that Dr. Laara’s experience and background made him a historic pick for the district. "With the growing population of Latinos both in the district and in the community at large, it makes sense to choose someone with great credentials and with a Latino background," said Yi Cintron, a retired BASD employee speaking during public comment.
In his remarks, Dr. Laara thanked the board and community, described the appointment as a beginning of a partnership, and pledged to "work tirelessly" with students, staff and families so "every child in the Bethlehem Area School District has access to opportunities that allow them to learn, grow, and thrive." He acknowledged the appointment’s significance for the Latino community and said he understands the responsibilities that come with the role. The board indicated Dr. Laara will assume responsibilities on July 1.
Speakers at the meeting also urged the board to prepare to defend the superintendent and the district against bigotry. A public commenter said the community has already seen racist incidents and asked the board to "actively support, protect and stand firmly behind him against the bigotry that has surfaced." Board members publicly affirmed their commitment to backing the superintendent.
After the vote the board recessed for about 20 minutes; committee meetings followed. No other formal personnel votes were recorded at the special meeting.
Next steps: Dr. Laara is scheduled to begin work July 1; the board and district staff said they expect to follow up with transition plans and community introductions in the coming weeks.
