Design board approves wayfinding and wall signs for Boston Children’s outpatient center

The Needham Design Review Board on June 1 unanimously approved a set of signs and wayfinding for the newly opened Boston Children’s Hospital ambulatory facility and its adjacent parking garage.
Tim Sullivan, representing the applicant, told the board the proposals address on‑site wayfinding and pedestrian circulation now that the building is open. He described five proposed sign locations labeled A through E and said the signs aim to direct patients, visitors and staff between the surface parking, the garage and the building entrance. "They're really focused on vehicular and pedestrian circulation to the garage," Sullivan said.
Board members asked about illumination (Sullivan said none of the proposed signs are lit), emergency access near Sign A (Sullivan said the area also serves as a loading/ambulance point) and whether one garage entry would be treated as the by‑right sign. Members described the proposals as practical and helpful for wayfinding; no member objected.
The board conducted a two-part roll-call vote. It first approved the by‑right garage sign (Sign C) and then approved a special‑permit application for Signs A, B, D and E. The roll calls recorded votes of yes from all members present (Steve, Susan, Millie, Felix and the chair) for both votes.
What’s next: The applicant will receive stamped copies of approved plans from design review staff and may proceed with permits and sign fabrication in accordance with the approvals.
